Assessment, hands-on treatment and a rehab plan for low back pain, at 455 Pacific Hwy, Crows Nest. Built for people who want to get back to lifting, running, working and sleeping properly, not just to a quieter back.

What low back pain usually is

Low back pain is one of the most common reasons people see a health professional, and most of us experience it at some point. When it hits, it can feel alarming: the back feels fragile, simple movements are guarded, and it's natural to assume something has been damaged.

The most useful fact up front is that the large majority of low back pain is what's called non-specific. That means it isn't caused by a serious disease or a structural failure. It's the joints, discs, muscles and connective tissue of the lower back being irritated or overloaded, often after a change in activity, a heavy or awkward lift, a long period of sitting, or a stretch of poor sleep and high stress.

Pain and harm are not the same thing. A back that hurts a lot is often behaving much like any other overworked, sensitised tissue: real, uncomfortable, and temporary.

What we look for in your assessment

The first visit is a proper history and physical examination. We want to know how it started, what makes it worse, what settles it, how it affects your sleep and training, and what you need to get back to.

  • Screening for the small number of presentations that need medical referral or imaging
  • Movement testing through the lumbar spine, hips and thoracic spine to find where motion is restricted or poorly controlled
  • Strength and control testing of the hips, trunk and posterior chain
  • Nerve testing where there is leg pain, pins and needles or weakness
  • A look at your load: training volume, work setup, sitting time and recent changes

What we do for low back pain

Treatment is hands-on and active. In the clinic that usually means spinal and joint manipulation or gentler mobilisation to restore movement, soft tissue therapy through the lumbar and hip musculature, and dry needling where muscle tone and trigger points are driving symptoms.

The part that changes the long-term outcome is the rehab. We're inside PT Central, so your strength work happens in a room with actual weights in it. You get progressive loading for the hips, trunk and back, coaching on how to lift and hinge under load, and a clear plan for returning to your training or your job.

You'll also get a straight explanation of what's going on and a realistic timeframe. Understanding your back is a treatment in itself: confidence and normal movement are consistently associated with better recovery.

When back pain refers into the leg

If your pain travels below the knee, or comes with pins and needles, numbness or weakness, there may be nerve involvement. That changes the assessment and the plan, though the principles stay the same: reduce mechanical irritation, restore movement, and rebuild capacity.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a scan or X-ray for my back pain?

Usually not. Guidelines advise against routine imaging for typical low back pain, because findings like disc bulges and degeneration are very common in people with no pain at all. We image when there are clinical red flags or when the result would genuinely change your plan.

How long does low back pain take to settle?

Most episodes improve substantially over a few weeks with the right activity and load management. Longer-standing or recurrent back pain usually takes longer and responds best to a structured strength and movement plan alongside hands-on care.

Should I rest or keep moving?

Keep moving within tolerance. Prolonged bed rest slows recovery. We help you work out what to keep doing, what to modify temporarily, and how to build back up.

Is chiropractic adjustment safe for low back pain?

For typical mechanical low back pain, spinal manipulation is a recognised option within an active care approach. We screen your history first, explain your options, and use gentler mobilisation or soft tissue work if manipulation isn't appropriate for you.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed to book. If you have an EPC/Chronic Disease Management plan from your GP, bring the paperwork with you.
